I would assume over a few 1/4 mile runs and the pic taken at speed (obviously). That's quite a clip to be taking a picture of. I don't think I would have the guts to take a "speedo selfie" at nearly 170MPH!

Definetely an extreme failure, blue/white smoke is certainly an engine failure of sorts, especially the fact you say loud bang suggest the engine dropped a piston/cylinder and the resulting white/blue smoke was piston blow by on an extreme level.
