Welcome Quiet man.

A quick search of the Technical section should give you a list of what to look for.

And with your JLR master tech brother he should also have plenty of knowledge - maybe some insider knowledge to share with us too ;)

You don't say if you're looking at dealer cars or privately - the 12m warranty from the dealer (used to be a great 24m until they realised what it was costing them!) is worth around £1k and at this vehicle age you may want to factor that in. You can extend it up to 100k miles / 10 years at point of yearly warranty extension purchase.

Other than the usual "check everything", consider tyre / brake disc / pad condition and associated cost, and check the nose cone and sills for gravel rash.

Also check the valved exhaust works, as they can get lazy if not used frequently - no problem noticing the difference in these early cars 8-)

And that the roof operates quietly and latches open and shut smoothly.

Get the VIN and you can run an online history check - if it's a V6S with the slippy diff look for evidence of the diff oil having been changed. Some have been known to fail but I'm not sure if that is just the later cars with an E-diff. or earlier ones with a proper mechanical one. Others on here will be able to advise better on that point.

Of course do let us know how you get on and post some photos once you've purchased your cat.

....Oh, and when you buy one you're going to need to change your forum name :D

Thanks Lunar, I think I will feel more confident buying from a dealer with a warranty in place so will probably go that way. I haven't thought about insurance but will only be using the car for summer /weekend blasts etc am I better off with specialist insurance or do people just go with normal insurance like admiral who I am with and could do multi car.

Normal insurance works for me. LV currently. I don't have multicar insurance, my R is my only daily driver.

Ditto with insurance - I don’t do multi-car as I like to see exact detail for each, and I don’t believe an F-Type, a 2005 Aygo, and a ‘65 Mustang would work on their algorithm 😂

Also on “normal” insurer for the F - was with Halifax, then HBOS before (yes they are different) and this year AA stormed it - either they got it wrong or bought more portfolio knowing no one would be driving much!

The Mustang, Aygo, and house buildings and contents are all with A-Plan who are brilliant - maybe I would say that having got a VIP day at American Speedfest at Brands, including lapping in the pace car 😬 - but they can’t quite ever get close enough on the F.

Edit: I’m with A-Plan, not F-Plan.

I used Admiral for a while under multi policy and covered my daily cars (inc. F Type), house and contents and it was easy to do, but after a couple of years they started to take it for granted (inertia) and went crazy on premium increases.

It was a real pain to break free with having to research so many policies, complete applications and pay individually, but similar to Lunar I ended up at the AA for the lot and with individual policies halved the Admiral multicar quote
To research I used a compare site but compared myself by going direct and it was actually more
All are now separate policies with AA really just acting as a broker

Hello Quiet Man & Welcome. I hope you enjoy your toy when you get it. I just love that name on an F-Type Forum! There's a thread about names in the off topic section. Do tell.

As well as Lunar's list, on older cars scored side windows and surface corrosion on the rear cross braces are very common, fixable but not esential repairs. The corrosion is no longer under JLR goodwill though so even under 6 years old. Neither should stop you buying but could be a haggling tool.

I chose a non-S badged car as I'd heard expensive stories about the configurable dynamics and the slippy diff and was looking pre 2015.

As for insurance I've used Admiral for the past 2 years. Piggy backed multi-car on my son's Fiesta and initially it was £205 for 10 months. At renewal they tried it on big time, but we got them down to below anyone else again. Our other cars are with Quote-me-Happy at AVIVA but they wanted silly money.
