Forced sale.

The purchase of a house in France means my perfect 15 reg 2016 model R AWD Glacier White convertible with 7,800 miles on the clock has to go .

Bought from a main dealer 5 months and 2,000 miles ago, they have offered me £10K less than I paid for it (and I did not pay over the top) but before taking the hit I wonder whether I should try to sell it privately.

Has anyone else faced that dilemma and do they have any advice to offer?

Worth a try obviously. Maybe call around a few other dealers. Trying to sell it direct to them without taking a car from them as part of the deal means they will always offer you less.

I agree with MOz, ring around a few dealers, see what they can give, 'We buy any car' and all of the others you can find.

£10k is a big drop but when you factor in the time of year, number for sale and, worst of all, the tyre kickers you might meet along the way selling it privately, it may be the best you will find this side of Spring!

One thing to bear in mind is that dealers are no longer car salesmen, they are financiers, their job is to get a punter to sign onto the finance deal and not to make 2 or 3 grand on the upsale of a car. Dealers are cash rich and want to find somewhere to put their money that earns them more than 1%. Buying your car for 60K+ and then immediately giving that value to a new customer at 5% credit terms represent an excellent return on their investment.

If your car is the right type and in an excllent condition they will be keener to get hold of it than they will let you know.

Yep, thanks Tall Dad for your common sense advice. The prospect of selling privately does not fill me with enthusiasm although a reduction in the potential depreciation does! I'll get on the phone to some other main dealers and see what happens

Hi JS66,

As well as main dealers, I would look at specialist premium dealers ... they will have a data base of regular and potential buyers ... do a P'Heads such as a starting point and pick out the non franchise dealers ... has to be worth a try.

Update - have you asked the dealer about sale or return? Its highly probably that the hard price drop is also to counter their stocking charges as roadster sales do slow down during winter. If you offered then your car to sell you may find they would agree to pay more as they only pay once sold. You save the hassle of tyre kickers, the dealer gets to sell without the cost of stocking, so you potentially have a win-win.

Put yourself in the position of many of us "enthusiasts" who are on this forum and others such as Facebook. We were all buyers once and had to find our dream car from somewhere.

I couldn't afford to buy brand new and spent many hours on P Heads and Auto Trader as well as Jaguar Approved used.

From memory probably less than 1 in 10 was a private sale but I would have bought private if the right car had come up at a reasonable distance away.

I would have expected the private sale to have been cheaper than the main stealers and from the sellers viewpoint I think they would (or should) pitch less than a dealer would sell, but more than a trade in. Pretty obvious I know...

Bottom line is - people are out there looking and looking for a good deal. If you pitch it mid way on the £10k and find a buyer - then everyone's a winner.

But as has been said, it's winter here and you may have to put up with some tyre kickers. All comes down to how you value time and effort.

It's worth a go at a private ad & see what happens. Nothing lost in trying and you may even lessen the £10k blow.

The right car at the right price should sell and if it doesn't you're no worse off!

I'm looking myself at the moment, but unfortunately, not sure if I can stretch to an R AWD!

I keep getting emails from my main dealer saying that they want to buy my car.......apparently....

I haven't taken the bait, but never the less, it's very tempting to call the number to find out a price.....I think i'm not going to be a happy bunny when they tell me though, somehow.
