If this system is quite weighty (doubt it is) would be very tempting to just remove it and get the weight savings. Though I suspect it only weighs around 10kg or less so hardly worth it. Though the fear of it just going off is quite scary and my view on things is if a pedestrian wants to jump out in front of you, that is there problem and whether you bonnet goes up or down, it will make little to no effect, their legs are most likely to be still broken.

The idea is that in the event of hitting a pedestrian the lifting of the bonnet allows an increased gap and absorption area above the engine. The low bumper hits below knees and flips the person on the car not under
If they didn’t do this then the bonnet profile would be higher and uglier.
If it helps saves lives and keeps the car lines looking great I’m ok with it.

My personal opinion is they don’t deploy by accident but by excess impact. If they did they we have airbags going off in cars every day and we don’t.

That said very interested in this thread outcome as I don’t fancy a large bill if it happens..

PEDESTRIAN PROTECTION SYSTEM

The bumper includes sensors that detect a collision with a pedestrian and includes energy absorbing foam and plastics in its construction, to reduce leg injuries.

During a pedestrian collision, the sensors initiate a bonnet deployment system that releases the bonnet latches and raises the rear edge of the bonnet by approximately 130 mm (5.1 inches).

This increases the gap between the bonnet and the components within the engine compartment to create a cushion to mitigate injury caused to the pedestrian.

The bonnet deployment system is active only when the ignition is on and the vehicle is driven between the speeds of approximately 20 km/h (12 mph) and 50 km/h (31 mph).

So probably best to hit speed bumps on excess of 31mph and not risk triggering the system. 😁

Update time:

The short version:

-I have my car back (as of yesterday)
-I could have maybe got Jag to pay, but they wanted to send the car off for analysis which would have taken 2 weeks.
-I wanted my car back so much that I paid and took it back.
-Bonus: The stereo blew up too

The long version:

Saturday 10th: Erroneous deployment of PSS due to small bump in road. Phoned Jaguar Roadside Assistance. They could not give me a courtesy car but arranged for a recovery van to take my car to the nearest approved repair facility which was Marshal Jaguar, Oxford (henceforth MJ). Their service department was closed, so no action until Monday.

Monday 12th: Spoke to MJ and explained the problem and said I felt it was an error. Was informed that PSS is not covered by warranty and the garage were not authorized to write off the cost of repair. They told me to contact Jaguar Customer Services (henceforth CS).
Phoned CS who told me that they could help , and that they would speak to MJ on my behalf and move things forward.

Tuesday 13th: Spoke to MJ, they hadn't heard from CS. Tried phoning CS, couldn't get through in a reasonable time and had other things going on that day.

Wednesday 14th: Spoke to MJ, they still hadn't heard from CS. Phoned CS and was told that effectively nothing from Monday's conversation had been recorded and that I would have to start the process over. So I spent another 45 mins on the phone to CS giving them a run down on what had happened and was told that they would contact MJ.

Thursday 15th: Spoke to MJ. They had heard from CS and were waiting to see if they should proceed with repairs or if an investigation was needed.

Friday 16th: MJ informed me that the bonnet had not been dented, and only the actuators needed to be replaced.

Monday 19th: Contacted by MJ. They informed me that the car had been fixed (which I assumed meant that CS had given the go-ahead). However on the test run the stereo cut out. They investigated and found the entire unit had 'burnt out'. This would be fixed under warranty but required signing off from CS.

Tuesday 20th: MJ informed me that that the stereo until would arrived and be fitted on Wednesday. CS contacted me and told me that they would not pay for the work unless the car was sent off to their specialist investigation facility which would leave me without a car for two weeks.

Wednesday 21st: Was informed that car would be ready for collection on Thursday 22nd.

Thursday 22nd: Collected the car from MJ. The woman I was dealing with was sympathetic throughout and wrote off the labor costs. Apparently they had spent at least 8 hours on the car trying to diagnose why the stereo had burnt out and if it was related to the PSS in any way.

Total cost to me was £796.
This was for the following parts:
2x C2P16233 Actuator (£294.15 each)
2x C2P24570 Actuator (£73.63 each)
1x JAXR8 12941010 clip (£2.01)

Overall, Marshal Jaguar have been really good and understanding. They agreed that the deployment was an error as my car was spotless with no evidence of impact. They also as stated about, wrote off all labor costs as a good will gesture. Customer services are there to weasel out of things rather than to help you. As for the stereo packing in during the fix, I honestly don't know and neither did Jaguar.

Hopefully that's then end of it.

I would say for anyone else in my position, fight harder than I did. Get customer services to take the car away for investigation if you are not at fault as that's the only way they'll pay. i was impatient as I had only had my car 2 weeks before this, so the prospect of it going away for another 2 weeks was not worth the repair bill to me.

In a perfect world, no. I guarantee they do though.
I know it's only my word but the slight change in elevation between tarmac and brick did not warrant the PSS triggering.

I went out and took a this photo today (rather than the google maps image in my original post):

Tell me if you think that would count as an impact, even at 30mph+

Glad your sorted...... (but yes I would of fighted harder because you still don't know what caused it to deploy in the first place)

That is hardly a bump at all.
