Just put a deposit on a 2016 (66 reg) V6 with 18k miles

Manufacturers warranty ran out in October last year and car comes with a 12 month MOT and a 3 month basic guarantee from the independent dealer that I have the car from

This is the first time I have bought a ‘prestige’ car outside of manufacturers warranty and my boss at work has been badgering me to pay for an extended warranty via Jag.

What does everyone think? What sort of money are they and what level of protection do they offer? Worth the money?

For what it’s worth, I will probably own the car for 2-3 years and be using daily and putting approx 15k miles on the clock every year

Warranty cost is around £870 pa.
Not sure if you will have to pay for an additional inspection as your not buying from a JLR dealer, you normally have to.
You will get strong opinions on the benefits of the warranty or the benefits of keeping the cash for any emergencies.
It will come down to what makes you comfortable.
For me, even though I know my car well peace of mind made me take out the extended warranty.

I’ve bought one for my 2017 V8 R AWD £64.8 per month for 10 months. Wouldn’t dream of running one of these without warranty. Not brave enough.

That seems cheap, is that a JLR promoted extended warranty or third party?

Mine is three years old in May and approaching the dilemma of what to do.....

JLR want £789 for a year.
Warranty Direct want £1134 for 3 years and this includes everything up to price of car for £100 excess per claim. You can make is excess free.

Oh what to do.

Yes genuine Jaguar with no excess. I always worry about third party warranties as I have heard lots of stories of refusing to pay for stuff.

I’d run a search as many long threads to on this and very divided opinions

I’m in the no warranty camp as all it is an insurance backed policy (inc. the JLR. badged version as I had the ‘genuine dealer warranty passed on as it was third party with claims based on the provider not JLR approval)
Priced on average cost of claims, plus admin costs and profit margin, so you lose (on average)

2 years Sine dealer warranty and in and with anniversary in a couple of months and no probs so I’m say £2k up. If The engine fell out or box grenaded, then for sure I’d lose.

It all about if you sleep easily or not

I am in the camp of having the warranty it's a shame JLR (or the company they use) charge far more than say BMW, the wife's M135i is £260 annually which then, for me makes it a no brainer!
Warranty Direct would probably be the only other one I would consider, but they do have some negative reviews as well as positive! Maybe the claims they have declined have substance behind the refusal, we will never know.
Mine is a long term keeper and whilst I can still get the JLR badged warranty, I will go for it then probably Warranty Direct for the £400 per year.

Looking on eBay you can get a diff for £750 a gearbox for about the same and a refurbished engine for £6500 . The failure rate on these big items does not seem to be a big issue going by posts on forums.
The biggest cost is usually labour but as i work at a major manufacturer truck dealership with loads of mechanics. I can safely say that there are some mechanics that i wouldn't let inflate the tyres on my car and some very good mechanics too. It all depends on which one gets assigned to your job.
An independant specialist would be much better in my eyes as they are usually privately owned and the owner will get rid of someone that is no good, plus they are much cheaper due to not having to pay for a £2 million showroom and stock of 100 vehicles.
So if you want your car looked after by a Jag dealer go for their warranty but if you are prepared to use a specialist or another garage that you trust ,either put some money away into an account each month or have a credit card for major repairs.

Good point about your service plans👍
This though then gets into the resale value discussion.
Buyers are rightly or wrongly swayed toward buying an F Type with JLR service history over a possibly better independent service history car.
