I’ve registered a new account for the sole purpose of adding my experience!

I bought a 2013 V6S from GS Coventry last April. It’s fantastic; fully loaded, IRR and 19,000 miles on the clock.

Earlier this year, I noticed a distinct whine from the back of the car, which could best be described as similar to a supercharger! The whine would increase in pitch with speed and was apparent between 30-70mph. I could also feel a ‘clunk’ noise when pulling away slowly, feathering the throttle, or turning sharply at slow speed.

JLR have confirmed the diff is stuffed. The oil was black and littered with metal particles. I first noticed the noise at around 28,000 miles. The diff is being changed under warranty, but surprisingly, JLR have said my car had a diff replacement back in early 2018! In other words, this diff has done c.13K miles / 2 years and has failed!

Are they made of chocolate? Does anyone know if there is a stronger aftermarket option available? Will changing the oil every year lengthen the life of the diff, or do I budget for a new diff every 24 months or so? Haha!

It’s also in because my wiper blades come on automatically, even when the car is switched off ... and locked ... and the bonnet is open.

Always make sure whoever does your MoT doesn't do the brake test on the rollers but on the open road with the old balance gizmo. The roller test puts a lot of unnecessary stress on an already weak piece of engineering.
When I had my first MoT I just explained to the tester it had an LSD and he said no problem he will road test the brakes.

God forbid your out of warranty but whats would be the cost for a new diff on a RWD R and a front and rear diff on a AWD F Type R.
Here is a good video on a DIY diff oil change on a F Type R RWD

I've been having rear diff issues with my 400 Sport - the dreaded groaning noises from the rear when turning at low speeds. Just had the diff oil changed and it was completely black. Fortunately there were no bits in it. The car is feeling better to drive now, and no more noises. The oil lasted 40,000 miles.

The service schedule of my MY18 says every 36000 mles or 3 years for rear diff oil change. 4 years for transfer box, 9 years for autobox and front diff.

Strange, on mine it is listed as the 64,000 / 4 year service for a diff oil change. I guess they do it differently for the V6 as it doesn't have an E-diff like your V8. Either way, mine needed doing a lot sooner!

Not so strange after all, my transfer box is 3 years, the rear locking diff is 4 years. I really should double check before I post anything. :(

heres mine copied from my other thread.

for a while ive had a low frequency thump when moving very slowly ie 2 to 3 mph e g pulling on to drive or rolling forward on tick over... more pronounced when turning sharply again like pulling on to drive from the road... . didn’t always happen just now and then..it was a muffled noise like a bass drum through a bass bin ( its a muso thing ,sorry) but i could also feel it through my seat as well.
anyway having read all about the diff issues on here i took the car to my local jlr independent garage and one diff oil change and £60.00 later its like a new car!!! not only has the thump gone (so far) the car feels more positive on the drive train front, much quicker and smoother to drive...
i thought it may have been the placebo effect after getting it done but even a week later still can tell the difference. its surprising what a difference too... the old oil was quite black apparently but no evidence of wear fortunately. i don’t think the oil had been changed before as only 38000 miles covered but its a massive improvement in how the car feels now.

diff oil change is a definite must do even if you dont think its due !

Hi All,

I've made an account to log my experience! MY F type R AWD 2015 29k on the clock had the 48month service included rear diff oil replacement in January 2020 (still had my HR Owen specialist cars 1 year warranty at the time.) The diff had been leaking apparently and I had the pinion seal replaced which is quite common by the sounds of it. 9 months and 900miles later the rear of car starts whining, I take it in to harwoods Basingstoke to have a wheel bearing changed, turns out to be the rear diff and I'm now out of warranty. £3300 quoted replacement + £192 4 wheel drive alignment as they have to take the rear subframe off to access it. ouch.

I haven't authorised the works yet, they're saying the oil has swarf in it and is metallic... my question to them is why this wasn't checked in January when it had been leaking and the oil was old and I was still in warranty. I have jag specialist Barny Jones in Farnham to quote the work and give me a second opinion. quote back was £3,273.59 and £885.54 if the electric motor on the diff needs changing too.

I wonder why the replacement oil has now highlighted the diff problem. did the carry out the service correctly in january. if there was swarf back in January and also If I have any other options. So far Jaguar want to replace the whole diff assembly, part cost is £2100. surely cheaper to diagnose and fix the diff. not really sure what to do, jaguar seem to have me cornered, something needs repairing,

Do I trust the dealership that the works are required or go elsewhere for 2nd opinion

Wish I had taken that ALA RAC extended warranty out before taking it in thinking it was the wheel bearing £374 repair...

Best regards,
Matt
