Hi guys,
I have a 2014 RWD R, with 34k miles on the clock I have started to get a constant whirring sound from the back of the car.
Upon doing some research online I realised it was a common issue with the rear diff.
I have had the oil changed using the recommended jaguar bot720 diff oil and ring replaced (in case of a leaky diff) and unfortunately it has not cured the problem.
The car is out of warranty, so I am looking for alternatives to get it repaired without the hefty bill from the main dealer.
Has anyone, or does anyone know somebody that has had the diff re-conditioned? And if so where?
I don't want to just send the diff to anybody so any recommendations would be welcome.
Thanks in advance.
the dreaded diff issue, help needed

Well I'd start by getting a specialist indy to diagnose that it is actually the diff and not something else, such as wheel bearing, prop bearing, etc.
Self diagnosis is a good start and not a problem to have done a simple oil change, but pulling the diff to pieces to install bearings and reset preloads, backlash, etc. etc. could be an expensive learning curve if it turns out to not be at fault
I haven't stripped a Jaguar LSD, but have done a fair few R&P changes, installed lockers and gone through the setup on Jeeps and it's complicated and would be very expensive

there is one on eBay for £750 which will probably work out less than the labour rate for stripping yours down.
When we pulled the plug out to drain the oil, there was around a 3-4 cm of built up metal flakes on it. This would surely indicate an issue with the diff and some metal on metal action. You can always expect some metal flakes but this was a big thick build up! I do get what your saying, I actually brought the rear wheel bearings to rule them out, but when we did the diff oil I think it became quite clear what the issue was.cj10jeeper wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 5:42 pm Well I'd start by getting a specialist indy to diagnose that it is actually the diff and not something else, such as wheel bearing, prop bearing, etc.

I wanted to know if someone has gone down the re-condition route, and could recommend someone. I have had a quote of £500 to recondition mine but I wanted someone trusted and experienced working on a F-Type in particular. Surely with it being a common issue someone out there has to have done a few.

It’s quite clear now that the diff has gone. Your original post made no mention of metal flake, or issues so it seemed uncertain.
Can’t help on preferred recon company, but good luck. £500 doesn’t seem expensive for such a job

I would before trying anything else go back to Jaguar, even if it is out of warranty, to suggest that they should replace it free of charge due to both facts that there is a known well-documented problem and also it's very low mileage.
The chap to write to is rcglover@jaguarlandrover.com .Tick the boxes on the e mail to show that it has both been received as well as opened.
This very Senior guy did wonders when I too had an out of warranty problem. Good Luck
