In 2015 JLR changed the system so that the OBD is taken out of the equation.
I can't confirm when that happened for the F-Type but the new system has a separate module that will only talk to the two original keys.
You can't clone any new ones.
If you lose one you will get stung for two new keys and a new module as others have found to their cost elsewhere.
The older system is on cars 00001 to 08869 (last five digits of VIN) and allows non Jaguar dealers to programme keys.
So in theory, if you have an older car you could break the window and then use the OBD port to code a new key to use to drive the car away with.

Cars 08870 and onwards is as per your post above.

That's good information to know for the OBD port.

Even though my car is MY16, I’ve hidden the port anyway so that it’s not easy to reach and I refit it if a diagnostic or software update etc is needed.

Sad to say I'm joining the OP on this topic - I woke up to a note from the Police during the night. Car was broken into via driver's window.

Speaking to neighbours whose dog woke them at the time it appears the alarm sounded followed by the police (2* squad cars) attending "within 20 seconds" and deterred the would-be thieves. Being NW London we are close to some dodgier parts which I suspect is why the police were thankfully so nearby.

I'm curious what the crims actually planned to do here - getaway car ('17 plate grey Audi) was idling just nearby but my keys were well away from the car so it couldn't, I don't believe, be relayed. Mine's a 17 plate so wouldn't have the keycoding susceptibility either.
No items of value in the car aside from the locking wheel nut and a top-quality breathalyser and nothing on display.

So far, I've got a smashed window which insurance is covering with no effect on NCD thankfully along with £100 excess.
It doesn't appear they made it into the vehicle - nothing taken and none of the glass shards appeared disturbed.

Annoyingly, the car is now windowless (taped bags over etc) and on-street until the glass Co sets an appointment this week. As per friends' experiences, I'm expecting to find chunks of glass for years to come...

One thing of note is that we did park very nearby yesterday whilst on an errand and noted two early 20s guys in a new grey Peugeot eying up the car and taking close up photos - they promptly moved off as we returned to the car. It's not unusual for the car to attract attention/photo-takers like that but the timing feels a bit too coincidental. We're now wondering if they were "spotters" or the like(?)

Thoughts on what they were trying to achieve here?

Sorry to hear what those idiots have done! You’re very lucky that the police were at the scene so promptly after the car alarm sounding otherwise the criminals may have managed to make off with your car! As well as deterring them, did the police actually arrest them? If not, there may be nearby CCTV footage which has captured this activity?

I’d say they were trying to drive your car away with the intention of moving it on, shipping it abroad (for a lucrative profit) or breaking for spares etc.

You’ve mentioned that your keys were well away from the car but were they shielded in Faraday signal blocking pouches etc? Those key fobs are active 24/7 and they give out a signal which can be picked up close to the car to allow entry and start. It’s quite possible that advanced relay theft kits have very powerful transmitters that will pick up the signal from further away and fool the car into thinking the key is inside. All they need to do is break the window or force the door open and hey presto! (I’ve previously elaborated on this and have since edited some of my posts as I don’t want that information to get into the wrong hands e.g. car thieves!) This is why, even though I don't have keyless entry, I shield both sets of my keys in Faraday pouches.

Did you have a steering wheel lock fitted? I ask this because a visible deterrent will quite often make thieves think twice and put them off.

Although a smashed window creates a lot of mess, the damage could have been much worse. As your car is now windowless (with taped bags etc) and is parked on the street until the glass company sets an appointment this week, it is vulnerable. It would be a good idea to move the car somewhere more secure e.g. a locked garage, car storage facility etc until the glass company arrives.

It does seem like a coincidence about the two guys you seen yesterday who were in their early 20s and were eyeing and taking close-up photos of your car, especially as they promptly moved off as you returned to the car. In my experience, when this has happened the person/s taking photos have commented on how nice the car looks etc. Those two guys could very well have been ‘spotters or the like’.

Hope you get the car sorted soon and there are no repeat occurrences.

Sorry to hear/see this.

If it was an attempted relay theft then they would of used the relay method to open the door. There is no point smashing a window, attracting attention and then trying relay.

As a new key cannot be programmed from the OBD either on this car VIN then it might of just been mindless vandalism or jealousy or to have a quick look in the storage compartment etc.

Scum bags anyway.

Not necessarily the case which is why it’s a good idea to shield the keys.

Thanks for the sympathies everyone - it was initially heartbreaking to see the damage but I'm surprising myself with how "OK" I've been about it since the initial shock. Nobody was hurt and so far it's just a pane of glass to be replaced...

RE Faraday cages - my keys weren't in a pouch/cage but I've got one ordered. Excellent tip!
Likewise with the steering-wheel lock, I've got one arriving tomorrow as an additional visual deterrent. The car isn't a daily so the hassle of removing it every time will just be a minor inconvenience and will probably annoy the GF more as it'll reduce luggage capacity even more.

I have to say I'm relatively surprised they targeted the F considering the criminal fraternity's usual love of 4-door fast Germans - there are 2* M3, 3*M4, 1* Golf R and 2* RS4/6s in the immediate neighbourhood that I'd have considered of far more of interest to this lot. Along with a seemingly infinite number of 911 variants that I'd have guessed would be more interesting for breaking purposes.
Now I think on it though the majority of the above cars have had wheel locks on them from what I recall during COVID walks. I fear others may have painfully learnt the lesson I've learnt this weekend...

Sorry for the double post all!

@RPSN, no arrests as far as I'm aware but it sounds like the Police did follow the suspects. I tried calling the Met today but since it's non-urgent I need to call during working hours - I'll keep everyone posted. I'm mostly intrigued as to the speed of attendance, one neighbour is convinced that Jag's assistance/SOS kicked in but I'm 99.99% sure that is not the case and it was sheer luck they were nearby (we are roughly on the route between a couple of estates and our local Police Station).

No CCTV so far, I need to canvas other neighbours in case they have RING type doorbells that may have caught some activity. I strongly suspect it'll be a case of hoods/masks though. Closest lead is the 17 Plate Audi though so perhaps I can surface the full reg. That car was likely also stolen though.

RE the young lads yesterday - yeah I did find it odd that they didn't say anything or even acknowledge with a nod etc as I'm sure we've all usually encountered. I'll put it to the Police when I speak with them this week for their thoughts.
