I’ve had a speed awareness course at 84 on the M3 in my wife’s old X-type back in 2013. Not certain whether they’ve changed the level that the points kick in nowadays though?

I was on the way to twickenham for an England game though so perhaps that understood the urgency! 😂

Just searched online and this site has the limits for prosecution and then speed awareness courses.

Bear in mind these are guidelines though.

Have you had the letter or do you only think that you will be getting one. If he was in the back using the camera he would mainly be concentrating on vehicles coming towards him. By the time he saw you (ie when you passed his van), he would have to react & focus on you. 85mph isn't something he would think was excessive & doubt he would bother. Hope it turns out ok
Up here in Scotland, we don't get the option of a speed awareness course & they are filling up the roads with average speed cameras.

I had my speedo calibration confirmed as being only 2mph out at 90mph indicated (true 88mph), by Sussex police for the bargain price of £100! i.e. they're quite accurate on these cars.

I drive using the Waze gps speed, usually 3mph below speedo. My dashcam is set not to show speed but it is embedded in the file. Can’t get software I have to show the speed but since the NIP said 85 I believe them.

My speedo seems to read 3mph over too. The spoiler goes up at 73, down at 53 (coupe), so the real speed is also known by the car, I suspect.

I got done in 2015 for doing 76 in a 50 (dual carriage way became single carriage way over the brow of a hill and there was the van). Held my hand up - I was stupid.

Got 6 pts and £760 fine but did not have to appear in Court - all via paperwork.

My point is however, it has made not a penny difference to my insurance premiums ever since. My broker tells me normally does not with 6 its and under.
