About to put a personalised number plate on but when taking the rear plate off I found stupid amounts of double sided tape that I really want to remove before putting the new plate on.

I've tries the usual recommendation of patiently rubbing and rolling with your finger tip but its getting nowhere. Any better suggestions that don't risk damaging the paint when you are
as cack handed as I am?

Use a hair dryer to gently heat the double sided tape and most of it will come of easily by rubbing with a clean rag. Any excess can be removed with turps but remember to thoroughly clean it off before fitting the new number plate.

I've heard that WD40 does a good job. Never tried it myself, but ....

I would assume the paintwork is petrol-safe, if you have a splash for your lawnmower.

If you're looking to buy something especially, my go-to would usually be AutoSmart Tardis

Tar remover, often sold as Tar and Glue remover is what I use. It's clearly oil based but not as caustic as fuel. Works a treat.

Best to IPA wipe down before attaching the new ones though!

I used WD40 and the edge of a credit card on mine last week and that worked well. Just need to be careful with the drips and wash the area clean afterwards.

WD40 is mainly turps (Stoddart solvent) and light oil, I think.

I got talking to a couple of ladies in a hotel bar in Germany and they worked for WD40. They told me the name comes from Water Dispersal (WD) and it was sample number 40 that was the most effective, hence WD40.
Always used it and never questioned the name until that night.

You need a Toffee wheel, (like a big soft light brown rubber wheel with centre spindle) bang it in a drill and bingo it will remove it easily, what the body shops use.
