But what does it do?Lunar wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 5:43 pm The button was optional at launch - you even see some V8S’s without it.

Dealer can’t answer. No button but still has active exhaust, so can only assume it’s just to turn it off

I think the ‘full monty’ is called an Active Switchable Sports Exhaust. This has the loud button. What it allows me (2014 base V6) to do, for example, is drive with the exhaust valves open at all times, no matter what the revs.

Doesn’t explain how models without the button work as it still have the active exhaust.Lunar wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 8:15 pmWhat is it about scm’s earlier detailed answer that you don’t understand?Pacemaker1000 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 7:40 pm But what does it do?

So either it’s always in loud mode or quiet mode or dependent on dynamic setting?
Button only gives you the option to turn on in comfort or off in dynamic?

My understanding is that:
Base, no active exhaust - no butterfly valves, not as loud.
No button, active exhaust - the butterfly valves open up at start, then close, then open again at about 3500 rpm unless in dynamic which opens them up;
button (switchable active exhaust) - if you leave it off, then it is as above. If you switch it on, they are open regardless of rpm.
The XKR was the same as no button active exhaust, but you could remove fuse 19 and have it open all the time. And many of us did.
So your understanding is pretty much right, except not all cars had the active exhaust. I think that might have changed in about 2015 or 2016.

I’ve only looked at new cars specs and base has active without switch.
All you had to do was read what I typed and see the defaults for each mode without the switch. All the switch does is toggle the "normal" behaviour.Pacemaker1000 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 8:32 pmDoesn’t explain how models without the button work as it still have the active exhaust.Lunar wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 8:15 pmWhat is it about scm’s earlier detailed answer that you don’t understand?Pacemaker1000 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 7:40 pm But what does it do?

Ahhh, but I think there was some confusion in the OP's mind about active exhaust vs switchable active exhaust vs normal exhaust, and I have to say I'm not sure whether I have it right myself!
