Thought it was time that I contributed so here are a few pics of the dashcam that I fitted today - in preparation for my holiday in the Scottish Highlands next week.

It’s very discrete, sits behind the rear view mirror on the passenger side. The cable was long enough to hide behind the trim along the top, down the passenger door, below the glove box and along the centre console to the power socket in the centre cubby.

Really easy to remove, there’s a small GPS unit that doubles as a mount and remains connected. The camera is pocket size so easy to carry.

Quality is excellent, attachment is a screen shot so lower resolution - native camera res is 2560x1440@60fps.

Hope this is useful - my intended use is just for scenery rather than security but happy to answer any queries. And hopefully post a few clips of some lovely Scottish roads in a couple of weeks!

Cheers,
Grum

Neat job. I have a Blackvue which is the little barrel looking cam - the sad thing is when I play back any footage and hear how bad my singing along with the radio really is :D

Same camera, same position. I managed to find a switched live amongst the electrics behind the mirror and piggybacked into that.

Hi Grum, Derivative,
The website says they make action cams dash cams, have either of you tried using this camera as an action camera, if so, how long does it record for with a 256GB memory card?

I've got my GoPro for that.
The VIOFO is fit and forget in mine. I only bother accessing the card if I need evidence. Continually records in small segments and overwrites the oldest.

@scharlton - I don't think it would be suitable as an action cam as it doesn't have a battery - so you'd need to carry a separate battery pack. Recording time at best quality on a 256GB card is around 17hrs.

Hi Grum,
I didn't plan on taking it out of the car, just wondered if you can set it to record, let's say, a track day and then transfer to a computer. If it can do 17hrs on a 256gb card then potentially it wouldn't start overwriting after 8 hrs of action.

I chose one because it is discrete and the shape somehow fits in with the car, almost OEM.
Takes great videos. Can’t post videos on here unfortunately.

Where did you find the "Switched Live" behind the mirror and how did you access it?

I can't remember which one it was but a bit of poking around with a multi-meter will find it. I soldered the two dashcam wires onto ordinary dressmaking pins and then squeezed them down the side of two connectors with a +ve and earth. Didn't need to disturb/splice/cut any exisiting wires or connectors. The current draw is pretty low (startup 400mA and, 250mA continuous without screen) and nothing got even warm to the touch. Been working for 3 years now.
