Hi

I’m hoping for some guidance guys as I’ve come to a full stop with Hatfields. My 2017 V6S AWD Coupe 20k mls has bubbling from corrosion, about 1” square at the lower forward edge of the passenger door.

I bought the car in May last year, and this January put a claim in for warranty on the corrosion.
The dealership had it assessed and forwarded the claim to JLR, so obviously they agreed it was a warranty matter however, JLR have rebuffed the claim saying it is from a stone chip and therefore not covered.

I took independent advice from Brooklands Autobody who were Jaguar Approved for body work repairs and also another paint specialist, both are convinced it is purely corrosion and definitely not from a stone chip!

Both tell me that this is not uncommon on JLR and BMW/Audi types.

Apparently it results from a small particle that settles in the area during spraying. Both also say the ‘supposed stone chip’ area has probably happened since the bubble occurred or during the assessment process, and not likely the cause of the corrosion.

Has anyone else had this? I’ve come up against a brick wall where JLR simply say ‘it’s not our fault’, even though the the car is less than 5 years old and within corrosion warranty.

Advice appreciated.

You should open a case with Jaguar with your complaint. Providing full details, analysis from the body shop AND what you expect to be done.

No sign of stone chip damage whatsoever , JLR warranty ins. should pay out , very annoying attitude .

I believe they will be referring to the visible mark on the lower edge of the door. The 'experts' consider not the cause though.

@Frottles - I'd certainly open a case with JLR and see where it goes. Given you have corrosion cover and a couple of favourable opinions

This is JLR to a tee , deny everything till put up against the wall , they are waiting and hoping that you will go away, it's as simple as that, looks to me you do have a case sure anti corrosion is up to 6 years , you have 3 choices, first get it fixed yourself , second open a case against them at the small claims court , and third get a local news paper etc involved , they don't like the 3rd option , a guy a few year back had this really bad on another forum he got autoexpress the car mag involved jaguar folded very quickly he was given a loan car till his was fixed etc . Press them ;)

I was hoping you would be able to show me that others have pressed and eventually won against Big Brother!

I’ll certainly push back and I hope for a positive resolution.

Me would phone up JLR customer service tell them your going to get it independently inspected and if proven in your case they will be getting the invoce sent to them , If they dont pay raise a case at your local court it used to cost only £50 to do this , again they have to pick up the bill , if judge rules against them get a reporter involved , they they will have to pay not only the repair but costs and slandered by the press . yes let us know

From limited reading on the web, it would appear most likely that for aluminium to corrode there would have to be exposure to air and water.
Once the piant "seal" is broken, water can creep under the remaining paint film and corrode around the initial site of paint damage.
So, while it may not be obvious it is quite probable that there was paint damage (chip) in the vicinity of the corrosion that subsequently permitted water ingress.
If your car is normally parked outside I would guess this is even more likely.
While it is almost certain that the corrosion occurred from the outside -in, not inside-out, the only way to confirm this is to remove the interior door trim and look for interior corrosion.
My take-away from this story is that I should be careful to deal with any visible paint damage as it occurs.
