A dab of Autoglym and a good polish - old socks work well, one for on and one for polish.

Are the tips stainless or chrome plated I wonder? I'm wary of polishing through chrome to whatever layer is underneath. I think I see a slight brass colour in a little place on one of mine, perhaps a previous owner polished them nearly to death?

Indeed, I would only use wire wool on an occasional necessary basis.
I find that an old hedgehog mitt works well to remove most of the muck, which after all was steam borne.
Then a polish, with just a dab of Autoglym if required.
It’s worked for me on a 2014 car for the last 6 years.
Having said that 00 wire wool is very fine and can even be used on old windscreens to shift stubborn marks - although an old speckled screen will require careful work with a drill and lots of patience!

I've used meguires NXT metal polish. I did it with a micro polisher (1") but no reason you can't do it by hand. After polishing the tips just clean off with normal bodywork shampoo.
