I mentioned before on the forum that I would undertake a trip from Austria working towards Spain, together with my 18jr son,
who just finished his high school exams [ gymnasium ]. He actually configured the car and sofar we only did some local drives
where we live and two sort trips to Germany.

This kind of trips take months of planning, in an attempt to get it 'right' . Now the planning for the route and hotels and so on
proved excellent sofar.

The only thing making us unhappy is the fact roughly 70% of the highest passes are closed due to recent heavy snowfall.

We had to change routes and end up spending days with alternative activities, as we can not drive the planned route.
I am now adapting the route the night before. Sofar I had no chance to compile video's or upload. I just do not have time for it.

A major headache is the very bad information the routeplanner gives on blocked roads. I now first make a route on google maps,
then put it in 'here'.

The day we leave I check on the 'google maps' phone app. This has very recent info, that can be updated by anyone. Very useful.

Open/closed mountain passes [ check the text balloon if closed ]: https://www.alpen-paesse.ch/en/

If anybody wants to know more, just pm me.

The first day [21/5] we drove through Germany. Very heavy traffic . The A3 was for large sections filled on the first lane with trucks, and many roadworks make it a very slow route. No interesting images of that day.

2d day (22.5).
We entered Austria through small town, avoiding the highways. One have to buy a taxsticker to drive on the highways. For the 36 hours we were about to stay, not worth it. We had only 3km's of highway which we could avoid.

The first dry moment in two days. Amazing how many uses shades of blue are used for roadmarkings and signs.

Town of Mondsee, rain continues..

We continued along the Halstattersee. The place is a real tourist trap. Busloads of Chinese..
Rain was so heavy the images I made are tints of grey only..

We then ran into the first pass, and actually closed too. The Sölkpass.. Since the navigation did not warn us we ended up
in front of a sign 'closed' .... We had to re-route around the mountains and forgot to insert 'no highways' , due to the toll.
So we were driving onto the highway with a sign ' sticker obliged' beyond a point we could still avoid it : on the entry lane!

So the first exit we went off again. I can only hope it will not result in a € 200 fine... Thanks mr. Here !!!

Only one hour late we arrived at the place we booked that night. The rain stopped the last hour of the drive.

23.5
This day two 3 passes were closed : Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, Staller Sattel and Misurina [SP49], which implied again lots of problems.
My luck was that I cancelled the Hotel in Misurina in time since it was too crowded in general according to reviews.

.. I will finish this later since internet is dead in the hotel..

Its my luck ! Local newspapers write this never happened sinds the 86 years they are recording snow heights.
On average there is 3m more snow then other years. Most roads are cleared, but the avalanche risk is to high,
so roads stay closed to 7th or 15th of june ! About a month later then normal.

@GusA. If you want I can send you the route when we're home. We also found reasonable priced hotels,
mainly the reason why whe went on the earliest moment after my sons last exam.

23 mai, continued.

Looking for the restaurant north of Zell am See, that I found on google earth.. ..closed.

24 of mai..

Lucky enough the weather cleared and we manage to do some passes we planned .

Pordoi Pass , [ 38032 Canazei, Trente Italy ]

8.JPG

9.JPG

10.JPG

Almost connecting is Sellapas [ Passo Sella 39048 Sëlva, Bozen Italy ];

11.JPG

12.JPG

13.jpg

From there we went to Sterzing, on the south side of the brennerpass. We wanted to follow the SS508 to Bozen/Bolsano.
Also "Here maps" failed ; open on the map, it turned out to be closed. So we headed back along the SS12, back from where
we came along the highway A22. We lost about 90 minutes due to the flawed map sytem and traffic info from HERE..

We managed to pick up our route from Bolzano on the SP99, which starts with a 'corkscrew' ;

14.jpg

This is a combination of tunnels and bridges leading you upwards spiraling, very weired experience !

Less spectacular further on;

15.jpg

I can not enter more pictures, continue in next post..

25th of may;

The Timmelsjoch was closed, we were told covered in 10m of snow. My son did some bouldering in the Sports Arena [indoor]
and I went for a walk in this town [ San Leonardo In Passiria 39015 Bozen].

Just befor the point were the Timmelsjoch [SS44bis] was closed ;

Hi @Dan_Veluwe, thanks for the offer - that would be very welcome if it’s not too much trouble? The roads look great and very little other traffic too, such a shame the unusual weather has spoilt your plans for some of the passes.

The scenery is breathtaking - I have driven to the Alps several times but normally on the motorways to get to a ski resort etc, I must remember to slow down and take more time to enjoy the surroundings next time!

Hope the weather improves for you both, look forward to the updates.

Looks great Dan. My son's last exam finishes at 10:15am on fri 14th of June. We are heading straight to Le Mans for the 24hr. Alas as we need to get there as quickly as possible we won't be taking the scenic routes.
