I use discarded carpet, which doesn't look pretty but great for kneeling to work on things. I've heard carpet tiles are a good option.

That might be a good alternative, doesn’t it get soaking wet when you drive a wet car in? Or does it dry out fairly quickly?

Yes carpet gets damp and compressed and dirty where the wheels sit.
