There are many, many brilliant routes in N Wales for a good hoon, so I
thought I would try and share some of my favourites with you all. This
is possibly one of the best, and gives so much variation in driving
scenarios to keep even the most seasoned of you drivers on your toes
(Plus it includes what I would rate as the very best road in N Wales the
B4391 to Blaenau Ffestiniog)

Starting ideally from Welshpool,
head towards Llanfyllin on the A490, this road combines narrow tall
hedged sections with wider open sweeping corners, you need to keep your
wits about you here, some shaded areas can stay damp and slippy. Traffic
on this road is minimal as it is not a main route anywhere.

Passing
through Llanfyllin, head towards Penybontfawr and on to Bala (the hub
of N Wales driving mecca) on the B4391... yes this is where this
brilliant road begins, and this part although not well known has some
spectacular driving. From Llanfyllin to Penybontfawr is very narrow, but
can be quick, with minimal to no traffic, again if pushing on here you
really need to be on it, and reading the road as conditions can be very
changable. Look out for the humpback bridge just afte the Lake Vyrnwy
turn, and the road does narrow to single track for 0.5 mile a little
later on.

Penybontfawr to Bala is just spectacular. If you can
manage to pull yourself away from the amazing mountain road, to take in
some of the great views this road has to offer. Meandering up the side
of a hill, in a narrow-ish road with walls either side and a hefty drop
off, leads onto wide open mountain road, brilliantly surfaced and hiding
2 amazing wide hairpins amongst the rest of driving heaven. There is a
3rd and final hairpin, under trees and over a bridge... i would advise
to slow right down, this is normally wet and ends in a solid 90 degree
right turn, or you can choose the wall Smile

From
Bala, make your way on the A4212 around the lakes, take up some scenary
and don't speed, as this is a favourite spot for the 5-0. After Capel
Celyn, you will come to a right hand junction signposted Blaenau
Ffestinog... even the junction allows for a good drift if you are so
inclined (but i would never advocate that obviously), and then, comes
the best road in N Wales (IMO). It starts a little narrow, but come round
the left-hand corner heading up the hill and you are met with racetrack
smooth tarmac, wide, open, hedgeless roads with some of the best corners
you could ever want. Mind the blind brow... you will see it coming
(back off the throttle, you're not Evel Knievel), and mind out for the
sheep, they enjoy the road too. You will come into a shaded area with a
house/cafe on the left, from here the road becomes a little more
technical, walled sections, off camber corners (watch out for these) as
you make your way to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

A nice old mining town
that hasn't seemed to change in 50 years, and is a good place to let the
brakes cool down. Head on through, up the A470 towards Betws-y-coed.
This is a great place to stop for food, and your F can have a well
deserved tank of Shell V-Power from the 24hr petrol station. The ladies
there are a right laugh and love to see all the sportcars come through.

From
here, you can either turn around and do it all again in reverse...
which I gaurantee you will want to, or head along the A5 towards
Llangollen, take in the EVO triangle (although compared to the roads
you've just driven will seem thoroughly un-interesting) and Horseshoe
Pass near Llangollen for a drink at the cafe at the top.

I hope
you enjoy this little gem, and if anyone is ever in the area or wants a
tour guide of N / Mid Wales, give me a shout, I'd love to show you
around. Map below.

Thanks! I've done a fair few of those and been great fun. I tend to avoid the Evo triangle though as it attracts too many people (and Police!)

I use this for route planning btw and then export into a TomTom ITN file so my mates and I are all following the same route:
