I get an odd smell ( not nice, but not unbearable ) from my aircon. A slight burnt smell. I have had it from new, so a year nearly. It doesn't seem to be improving, if anything getting worse.
Anyone had the same problem ?

The aircon works brilliantly otherwise.

Try the aircon cleaning aerosol first. It only takes around 20 mins. If the smell doesn’t go then off to the dealer.

I get a slight wet carpet/dog smell for a couple of minutes after I switch the AC OFF. I think this is normal and is due to the cold bit warming up and drying off.

So I always try to turn off the AC a mile or so before I arrive so the thing is not sitting with a wet evaporator circuit.

Not sure about burnt smells (different bacteria smell different), but seeing how the smell relates to switching may give you more information.

I've been getting a strange smell from the air con over the summer for about 30 seconds or so when it starts. It is particularly noticeable when the car starts and the air con comes on straight away. Back to normal after a short while though.

The car is due for it's 2nd year service, so will get them to check.

I had this problem on my previous Audi and after some research I took out the filter and saw it was full of leaves! Have a look here for the F-Type filter location and either clean it with the relevant spray or replace:

If you get an A/C cleaner bomb line the footwell with thick newspaper as they tend to spit quite a bit. Worth a try for a tenner or so when any smells exist. Dealer will charge £30+ for it.

I had a burnt wheat type smell on my previous 2014 V8 S. It wasn’t caused by a spill or anything and I tried all of the bombs and it didn’t solve the issue. It went to the dealer, they put a bomb in it, but when the ammonia smell wore off the small dame back. The car had never been smoked in or anything like that.

I never solved the issue and sold the car and updated to a MY 2018 which doesn’t smell at all.

I have since read of an XF that had a similar problem, which was traced to an issue with the condenser that was cured by its replacement. I’m not sure what the issue exactly was though

Before doing anything else I’d change the filter. They are the cause of countless smells and issues as they fill with dust, leaves fungus and bacteria.
Unless you are sure it’s changed recently do so

In the past I’ve taken them out of Z4 black with mouldy and full of leaves

V6S Coupe built September 2015. I had the musty smell (not burnt smell) on start up after about 9 months / 5,000 miles (pong went after a minute or so after start up): the dealer administered super-strength bombe in July 2016 lasted about a month and the pong returned for a couple of weeks until colder weather set in. The Autoglym bombe lasted two days. No other vehicle (JLR or other) I've owned has had this problem.

Spring 2017 and the pong returned: in June 2017 the evaporator was replaced (dashboard out) . Cure lasted a few months and then pong returned.

Spring 2018 I noticed the Topix bulletin on poor a/c performance caused by faulty direct pressure sensing valve (dps) - aka electronic control valve. Valve replaced and now pong free for two months, including recent hot spell. So far, so good.

Car has now done 12,000 miles in three years. Garaged (dehumidified October to May) so I didn't think filter would be an issue.

Hope this helps.
