So to summarise for the OP.

The pipe that is cut/chaffed is the coolant return pipe. It will need changing.
The white residue is from coolant leaking. Presumably from that pipe under the engine cover.

How long have you had the car for and where did you buy it from?

As the car is a 64 plate it will be out of warranty but if you purchased from a dealer within the last 2 years then it will have an extended used approved Jaguar warranty.

Thanks very much for the information guys, much appreciated. I bought the car recently (end of Jan) approved used from Barretts of Canterbury, and so it has the extended 2yr warranty. I'm actually in Surrey, so will be taking it to Guy Salmon to get them to have a look. Would you expect this to be covered under the extended warranty?

Yes for sure. Although perhaps expect an argument as with all extended warranty as they might claim wear and tear however a chaffed pipe and coolant loss is not wear and tear.
