I would be surprised if it's due to aged fuel, suspect something else. My mowers runs OK with last year's petrol, as does my motorcycle which hadn't been used for several months.

The technical term for that is "an Italian tune-up", as you well know! ;)

It was easy when we had the 'white fuse bulb'...at least that was the first one to start with.

Suprised if the petrol had gone off, used to store my motorbikes over winter with out any problems, as mentioned earlier likely to be a coil pack or some other electrical gremlin.

tend to agree with others that is unlikely to have been the fuel, i hadn't used mine for about 6 months (covid/2nd car) and have not had any issues.

Amyzoe, you probably had some water in the bottom of your tank that got sucked in once you have driven a distance.
Modern petrol contains Ethanol, that condensates water from ambient air. On regular use the mixture remains homogeneous, but when you leave it standing for several weeks in tank the water being heavier starts settling and creating a layer in the bottom of the tank.
When parking for long time, better to have a full tank.

Another reason to fill the tank when storing is a half filled tank will corrode above the fuel line due to condensing water, it could have been any of the many suggestions, but has hopefully cleared and you wont see it again!

The tank is made of plastic resin.

I've always left my vehicles with next to nothing ¼ of a tank and no more.
Never had an issue with rust etc, and as already mentioned, modern vehicles have non-metallic tanks.
Even my bikes some with mild steel tanks seem fine...maybe I'm lucky, I do try to keep the area at a reasonable temp and control the humidity.
