Is a loose key barrel normal ?

I just tried out the emergency key blade for entering the car so that I know what to do if I ever need to do this.

When I push the key into the key hole the whole barrel pushes inwards into the door. You then have to sort pull the barrell back out with the key before turning.

Seems odd/broken. Is this normal ?

I've only used my key once and I don't recall the barrel pushing inwards, just seemed like a normal lock to me.
