3000 miles into the ownership and traversed the country twice north to south. I now have that very annoying squeal when in stop start traffic and manoeuvring in car parks. It had done 2k when i bought it so either had some spirited braking in the past or an over enthusiastic application of wheel cleaner/atf by a valeter.
Dealer has just dropped me off a new 450 in a really old school green with black wheels and taken mine away to resolve.

I am assuming its the standard lack of grease or badly manufactured vibration sticker on the back of the pads rather than a glazed disc/pad from hard braking but will soon find out.

Not sure if you’ve seen it but there’s a Jaguar Technical Bulletin (attached)......’Squeal Noise From Rear Brakes - 380mm Brake Discs’.

Taken from the bulletin......

Situation: A 'squeal' noise from the rear brakes may be evident at slow speed as the vehicle is coming to a stop.

Cause: This may be caused by noise generated from the contact points of the brake caliper and pads.

Action: Should a customer express this concern, follow the Service Instruction outlined below.

Basically, the pads are removed and grease is applied to various points at the rear of them, the caliper piston and caliper carrier.

Also some good info on squeaking brakes here.....

Would be interesting to know the outcome of the dealer repair on your car.

Thanks RPSN

Funnily enough the service manager claimed no such bulletin existed.

It is now back, albeit with half a tank less than this morning which has peeved me a bit and the promise that its been 'sorted'. Nothing from the actual workshop though so I have no idea what they have done.

Not impressed with this dealer at all really, Service department is terrible but then they are probably snowed under with Landrovers getting fixed ;)

If you have Journeys enabled you may be able to see where your fuel went ....

I'll be booking mine in for its 4yr service in the next few weeks.

My brakes squeal alot now... much moreso than previously.

I'd like to get the pads replaced with less dusty ones, but I imagine a main dealer won't consider swapping them for non-standard Jaguar ones. Hmmm.

Doesn’t say much for the service manager at that dealership!

Half a tank is a fair bit of fuel. As scm suggests, if you have ‘Journeys' enabled you should be able to see where it went?

I’m wondering if they’ve taken the car up to relatively high speeds and done multiple hard stops to ‘deglaze’ the pads (which sometimes works for a while) rather than removing them and applying grease as per the Jaguar Technical Bulletin? On the other hand they may have done both?

The main thing is the issue has been sorted but if it were me I’d be asking for details on exactly what the workshop did? They may also be able to provide you with a video?

No need to sympathise with the terrible Service Dept being snowed under with Land Rovers getting fixed. Jaguar is a prestige car brand and certain (but not all) dealerships need to get their act together ;)

Hmm... my brakes have recently also occasionally squealed a bit and I was going to post a question about it.

I see that the bulletin says "NOTE: Normal Warranty procedures apply". So this would typically be covered by warranty? My car is just with the dealer to get a new O2 sensor and diff under warranty so if this is a warranty matter I might tell them to fix this too.

I doubt that the main dealer would fit non-standard pads for you as it may render your warranty invalid if you have one? (Could be worth asking though).

The brake noise guidelines for Jaguar Technicians state.....” As part of your analysis, inspect the braking components to ensure OEM parts have been fitted.” Also, specific exclusions for warranty include.....”Non factory-fitted components, unless parts are both genuine and fitted by a Jaguar Dealer.”

Of course, if you’re out of warranty or not too bothered about it, you can fit whichever pads you like.

I should have clarified the fuel part.

I bought the car in Edinburgh but live in Glasgow. When the noise started I had called the local main dealer who could not book the car in for 2 weeks so i called the supplying dealer to get their help. After a few promised call backs that didn't materialise, i called the 'hand over specialist' (only car dealers could create such a pointless role) and she managed to get the service manager to call me back. He said he would look over recalls and bulletins and call me back which he did and reported that nothing existed for the car. They then offered the chance to drive through to Edinburgh and wait while they investigated the car but that there were no courtesy cars so if there was a part needed, i would have to make my own way home. Obviously i said no and that they could find me something surely. I then had a call back saying Monday this week a driver would come through with an f type courtesy car and take mine away.

Car duly arrived with a call 30 mins before, so far so good. Nice older chap takes the car away. Receive a call back 2 hours later saying they can't hear anything and can i elaborate, despite me having a 20 min call the week before with the service manager giving as much detail as possible on the causes and situations where it happened (exactly as the bulleting describes actually).

I then get a random text 'Good morning, just a quick update your vehicle is moving into the workshop and i will update you shortly. Kind regards' at 12:18

Then nothing. Car is showing unlocked with windows down, doors and boot open on the app. I have a further tracker that shows it is inside the workshop, so far so good.

Then i get a call at 4pm from the same driver as this morning telling me he is half way to me.

Car arrives, driver doesn't know why I was not told and doesn't know what was done.

Call service dept., nobody available and manager gone home early. Original salesman on day off and hand over specialist off sick. I speak to sales manager who is rightfully embarrassed and promises a call back. its 10:40am as I write this and no news.

The fuel was promised to be replaced, not from me asking but their offer. A minor point but an additional ball drop that doesn't help their case.

So I have the car back, do i trust it has been properly fixed? I will know later today on the school run i suppose
