Clicking noise when turning... New carbon ceramics?!

My car (2014 R Coupe) recently started making a clicking noise when turning, coming from the front right wheel area.

With the steering dead ahead there's no noise at all, with one turn of lock (in either direction) the clicking starts. The noise doesn't change when more steering lock is added.

It makes the click with every rotation of the wheel, so obviously with more speed it clicks more.

I noticed this after the tyres were changed, but it could have been doing it before then and I've just not noticed. In the past few days it's developed from a click to more of a click and grinding noise.

It's gone to a main dealer today and they've said the issue is damaged pads all round (not worn, but cracked on the surface...) and they need replacing (£3k... Yay for carbon ceramics).

Before I actually go and pay this, I just want a sanity check...

If it is the pads, I would expect the noise to at least change as I apply brake pressure, but it makes no difference. I've put it on full lock and driven at 5-10mph, it makes the noise, as I add brake pressure the only change is the frequency of the noise as I'm slowing down.

Has anyone else had this issue? If I've got to do the pads then so be it, but I'll be pissed if I pay that and I don't need to.

When mine made a similar noise it turned out to be one of the Torx bolts holding the disk shield on unscrewing itself and rubbing on the inner surface of the disc. My Independent diagnosed the issue very quickly and cleaned up the damaged area so it didn't ruin my pads any further. He also removed and threadlocked all three bolts to make sure the problem didn't recur. Brakes are fine again.

I have the steel brakes so may not be your issue.

If it was mine I’d be taking it for a second opinion to be sure, do you have good a local non dealer specialist you can use?

Delay in replying...

But took it to an independent who also couldn't find a source of the problem. Both Jaguar and the independent have noted that the front brake pads have started to show cracks in the pad material and recommended replacing them, thought both agree it's probably not the source of the noise as the noise doesn't change when applying the brakes. (i.e. if the noise was the pads moving around, then applying brakes should remove or change the noise, but it has absolutely no affect on the noise).

So, going to have to replace the front pads due to them cracking (still 10mm of pad material on them...), and the rear parking brake pads due to wear which is also surprising. That's a couple of grand, and everyone seems to agree it won't fix the noise. Yet no one can actually find the source of the noise.

I'm reluctant to keep taking it back to Jaguar as it's not particularly fun having to pay for an hours labour at main dealer prices for them to say they don't know what the problem is...

It may be nothing, but it's also very loud and definitely wasn't doing it when I bought the car so hard to write off as "normal".

Has anyone else had this issue?

So the Torx bolts holding the brake shield were all nice and tight?

Not personally checked, and currently out of the country, but neither Jaguar nor the independent could find anything obviously wrong and they said they checked that everything was torqued up. Definitely sounds like something I should confirm though...

Is your car a AWD. Just wondered if the drive shaft UJ was ok. They can cause clicking when worn.

@tjs (my initials!)

From your earlier posts I would say that this is not brake related.

When steering, forces affect different parts of the car:

Firstly, I would check there is no nail on the outer or inner edge of the tread (This only comes into contact when turning forces distort the wheel contact patch i.e. steering in one direction or other)

Secondly, Whilst it's up on a jack turn full lock in either direction and spin the road wheel by hand and feel it as it rotates; It could be a wheel bearing about to throw its hand in. Try to pull the wheel out by hand as if you were removing it. Try top and bottom forces by hand to see if there is an play.

Also, check the security of the tyre valve that holds the TPMS sensor into the wheel.

Check security of wheel balance weights.

I could go on there's several other areas, but want you to try the above first and see what is revealed.

I've just recently bought a 2014 R RWD and got exactly the same sound and after getting new tyre's on the front of the car.... so there appears to be a pattern here. Did you ever make any progress on this @tjs?
