Hi all,
I had the car up on a ramp the other day and noticed an oil leak which I've been told is a 'pinion seal' leak.
Anyone familiar with this and is it something I should be concerned about? I have the 2016 V6 S.
Judging by the oil leak shown in my pictures, would you say it is acceptable to leave it as it is, or should the seal be replaced?
Thanks
Oil leak

if it is under warranty i would get it done as it is a well known issue. You might even get it done as a good will repair if out of warranty .
When you say that it's not worth a trip to the dealers........I assume that the oil leak is coming from the 'pinion seal' in the differential assembly (differential oil drain plug shown in photo). Does this mean that if I leave it as it is, I would have to top up the differential oil occasionally? Also, is this something that will get worse over time?
The car isn't under warranty but I suppose I could try the goodwill route.

i had my Ducati electric throttle replaced as a good will gesture even though it was 18 months out of warranty . i also had a repair done on a 10 year old bmw m3 . I just took copies of forum posts to show that it was a known manufacture fault each time. The dealers said no way but i insisted that they get the manufacturers involved .
It is quite easy to totally destroy the diff if you fit a new seal without torquing it the right way.

You did well there
Apparently, the cost to replace the seal is around £400 and most of this is the labour charge. The pinion seal itself costs approx £17 at my Jaguar main dealership!
I'll try the goodwill route but if I'm unsuccessful would you say (judging by the oil leak shown in my pictures) it's acceptable to leave it as it is, or should the seal be replaced?
I wouldn't do the job myself so if need be I would take it to my Jaguar main dealer. As you have said that it's quite easy to totally destroy the diff if you fit a new seal without torquing it the right way, I think it may be best to leave well alone? As Tel has said.....it's not even worth a trip to the dealers?
I posted my enquiry in another F-Type group and a Jaguar technician replied saying......."I have replaced a few pinion seals, but follow the book on it or it will lead to more issues. You just have to mark the shaft, nut and part that the drive shaft bolts to it. Use a dial caliper and measure the threads."

i would try for a good will repair . If they refuse i would keep an eye on it as it does not look like it is dripping.
I'll give it a try.
You're right in saying that it's not dripping but I'll keep my eye on it just in case.
Thanks for your help with this issue

Ok thanks.
If I don't get any joy with the 'goodwill' I'll ask an independent Jaguar specialist in my area and compare price with Jaguar main dealer.
