Having owned my car for 3.5yrs, something made me think to take a proper look behind the seats for the first time. I set them all the way forward and in addition to finding a mechanic’s torch - I wonder if the mechanic was once lost behind there too - I found what looks to be pools of sawdust behind both seats. Has anyone seen anything similar? Or perhaps like mine, that region in your car remains as yet unexplored.

It's rust from seat springs ! Put your hand up under the seat and you will feel it.

For rust like that to form, there is more than just a moisture issue.
The carpets/seat squabs must have been pretty wet at some stage for damage that deep to occur.

In that case, it may not be rust flakes after all!

That rust suggests flooding.
Was the car driven in the ocean or the roof left open and filled with rainwater??
Hard to believe the rust occurred without immersion for a period of time.
I would check other areas for similar condition..
