Did this many years ago, my biggest driving disappointment experience ever and to make matters even worst, the pizza in Italy at the top was awful. However, the absolutely stunning views more than made up for it!!
We went up the same way as you, but came down the "unofficial" rear road, much more fun.

Did the Swiss alps in 2018 on the way to Tuscany.
Itβs what convertibles were made for

Thanks for the hint ! For me it was a first, I'll try to get your way next time !
Actually, I guess you refer to the Umbrail pass ? I did that some years ago, turned to Bormio then. Didn't remember as it was before the time of satnav.

I disagree. Convertibles are for the seaside. Less chances of debris falling from the rockface..

Excellent videos brings back great memories of doing it on a Motorcycle a few years back, did it from Merano side across to Bormio and back, then down the Umbrail on the return bit, fun with coach's doing 3 point turns on the hairpins, and crazy cyclists racing each other and overtaking each other 3 across . Pizzas, yuk, but the guy at the stall doing sausages were brilliant.

Too much traffic but scenery great - better in a convertible obviously!

I used to work (among many, many other things), with 'forward defence systems' , nets and fences / barriers to protect against snow / avalance / rockfall .
The damage I've witnessed from rocks the size of your hand, you wouldn't believe. Of course, a tin roof doesn't safe you either then.
