No CD player

Ok, I know I’m a dinosaur. I still mostly play vinyl at home albeit on a high end vintage NAD/Thorens stereo. I have a large cd collection and all my other cars are CD player equipped. Has anyone successfully used a portable CD player via the usb input? It would be preferable to ripping all my cd’s to a usb drive.

Cheers,
Pete

How is it preferable? they are both digital formats, and USB is solid state, CD mechanical.

Hi Pete,
Are you sure you don't have a CD slot.
I have a MY16 V6S and it has a CD slot at the back under the centre of the arm rest.
I'm with you and have a large collection of Vinyl and CD.

I ripped (most of) my vinyl & cd collection to usb drive for the car. So much more convenient, and I can shuffle the entire collection if I want.

And 600 CDs take up a bit more space than a 1 inch cube! ;)

Mine doesn't, although I had to run outside just to double check I hadn't missed something 😳.

Like Basher, I ripped a lot of music to a USB stick for the car. It was a load of hassle ripping it in the first place but very handy once done.

No CD player in centre console sadly, just a plastic blanking plate. I’ve seen a USB interface cd/dvd player online for about $100 which is advertised for new cars without CD players. Seems like an easy option. Reviewers give positive feedback and state you can still select tracks etc with steering wheel controls. Is there any reason this wouldn’t work in my F-Type?

If you really want to stay on CDs for the car then I'd say visit an car audio specialist store because your best bet might be to get a proper one fitted, possibly a CD changer in the boot would work wired into the head unit if it has the connections on the back (It should have but I don't know). A USB one might work but I would imagine there could be problems with vibration if it's not fitted somewhere securely with some damping.
It's probably easier to go down the hard drive route though. I use an old iPod classic 160gb, stores thousands of albums all ripped at high quality, and works perfectly with the head unit (on mine at least).

One feature on my F-Type is the built in hard drive not sure of the capacity of this, but I have about 300 tracks on mine. CD’s are ripped via ITunes and use a USB to transfer them to the car. Is this not a standard feature on later cars?

I use a 6th Generation iPod Classic or a 120gb USB. The usb takes longer to load and often (almost always) reverts to the first alpha-numeric track each time the car is started up, but displays the artwork correctly. The iPod is more reliable, carrying on from where it was last played, but not displaying artwork, unlike Phil above, which may be because his is a later generation F-Type, just the metadata. Overall I prefer the iPod. Never used the built-in capacity as I'm unsure whether I will get all my 4,600 odd tracks on.
